What should we expect during the permit process?

Prior to installing a fiberglass pool project with Artistic Pools every TWP requires a Permit to be completed and processed.  Fortunately you will have the pleasure to have Artistic Pools complete this process for you.  When our Sales staff arrives at your home for a free consultation we will be prepared to inform you the customer of any size limitations that we see.  We have done over 500 TWP swimming pool permits over the years.  We have a list of township setbacks listed in our database to reference if need be.  Just know that setbacks vary in every TWP and in some cases townships have different zones with different setback requirements.  Once you decide on using Artistic Pools for your swimming pool project we then can begin to submit he permit to the TWP.  We have to follow specific steps in order to get the permit processed quickly without any delays.

Step 1

As soon as you begin to think about a swimming pool project try to get your hands on your survey to your property.  Usually you can find this with your mortgage papers if not there check with your TWP they sometimes have a copy on file.  Currently 50 percent of townships require a more detailed survey called a Topographical Survey/ or Grading plan.  These types of surveys give the TWP additional information such as elevations and water run off.  Townships utilize this practice to eliminate builders from building too high and directing the flow of water to adjoining neighbors properties.  These types of surveys if required has to be done by a licensed engineer in the state you reside in.  If a Topo is needed this will cost you on average between 700 and 1200 depending on the engineer and could take approximately 2 weeks or longer to complete.  We do have engineers that work for our company.  We will know all of this information prior to a site visit to your home so there will be no surprises once the permit process begins.

Step 2

If you are planning on installing a gas heater on your pool then we would need to get a licensed plumber involved in the project.  Although we are strong supporters of Electric heat pumps we do sell a couple of Gas Heaters a year so this is for you gas heater lovers.  If you know a plumber fine, he or she would need to fill out a plumbing tech form and send that along with a riser diagram to the address provided at the bottom of this Blog Post.  If you do not know a plumber, no problem we have a couple that work along with us.  Just remember a TWP will not accept an incomplete permit with missing items.  Our job is to make sure we have everything needed as to not cause any delays in getting approvals and beginning your new fiberglass pool project.

Step 3

All Townships require that a permanent fence be installed, if one is not currently in place.  If you do have a fence in place we need to make sure it is pool code and the correct locking mechanism is in place.  If you do not have a fence in place we recommend contacting local fence companies to get pricing and define the style fence you are choosing so we can include on the building permit.  This information has to be located on the survey. If you can not locate a fence contractor we can help you locate a contractor, or you can use our fence guy depending on job location.  Some townships require a fence permit to be included in the permit package however some allow us just to include the company name of fence contractor, address of Contractor, Phone Number, Price of fence job, Type and Height of fence to be installed and their home improvement contractors License number.  If a fence permit is required you need to have the fence contractor fill out the fence permit form, just one page and either mail it to us or bring it to the TWP and ask them to include it in our permit application.  Once we have these documents in hand we can then mail the completed building, Zoning, construction, electrical and FENCE and or PLUMBING SUBCODE if needed to the TWP for review.

Fence Requirements

Inground swimming pools shall comply with the following with most townships.

1. The top of the barrier shall be at least 48 inches or 4′ above grade measured on the side of the barrier which faces away from the swimming pool.  Note that some,  only a few TWPS require a 5 ft minimum and is very unlikely.

2. There are also different requirement for the many types of fences out there.

Chain Link fences require the small links so they are non climbable.  The mesh can be changed out.

Slatted wood fences need the horizontal rails to be located on the pool side so the fence is non climbable from the neighbors Property.

PVC fencing is fine because generally there are no horizontal members to climb on.

3. The pool has to be completely enclosed with a fence barrier.  It can be either around the pool itself, or it can be around your property extending off the corners of your house.   This method of installation will allow direct access into your swimming pool project so make sure you install door alarms if your children can not swim yet.

4. The gates entering into your pool project  must comply with TWP regulations.  The gate lock mechanism must be a minimum of 54″ high, must open outward away from your pool project, gate must be self closing using a spring latch and gate must be self locking.

So how long does my permit process take in the TWP?

Generally speaking a swimming pool permit normally takes 20 business days or 4 weeks on average.  With that said we do have Townships that take a week or two and some that take over a month.  Once we have everything in hand it only takes us approximately 2 days to get the paperwork together and out to the TWP. The rest is in the hands of the Township.

What will hold my permit process up?

A variance.  A variance is needed when either you exceeded the Townships allowable impervious ground coverage or if there just isn’t enough room to install the pool of your dreams with the township setbacks.  Say for example you have a 50′ wide backyard and the Twp setbacks are 10′ from the sides and rear.  That means you have 20 ft of setbacks, ten on the left side and ten on the right side.  This means the largest pool you can put in without a variance is a 30′ pool.  You now have to make the choice.  You wanted the 34′ pool but you can only do our 30′ pool.  You can either apply for a variance which will hold the process up approx 2 months minimum or you can put the 30′ pool in with no problems.  The choice is yours and we will do our best the let you know ahead of time of the maximum size pool that can be installed in your yard.

Bulk heads

If you live on the water especially with a bulkhead the general rule of thumb is a setback of 15 ft to waters edge.  I know that long beach island NJ requires the installation of pilings into the ground to attach to the pool in case of that 100 year flood.  If pilings or footings are required a local engineer would have to provide us with plans in order to proceed with the pool project.

So how much will my permits cost?

Most townships charge on a per 1000 basis however i have seen a lot of Twps not follow the general rule.  I would say the average building permit costs around 350.  I have seen the occasional 200 permit and some up in the range of 800.  Keep in mind if the TWP required a Topo/grading plan or a piling engineer if you live on the water this will increase your total costs of permits.

Dispelling the Myth

The most common myth surrounding fiberglass pools and propagated by competitors in Gunite pools or Vinyl Liner pools is that “Fiberglass pools pop or float out of the ground.” When you are told this you should immediately ask just how a pool with 80 tons of water in it pops out of the ground.

The reality is that no more will a gunite or vinyl liner pools pop or float than will fiberglass pools. In fact any watertight object will float if there is more water under it than in it. Pools can only float when they are drained and the water under the pool exerts upward pressure because there is no water in the pool.

So why would you need to drain a pool? Gunite pools need frequent draining to remove cracks, acid wash, clean stains and re-plaster the pool. Similarly, vinyl liner pools must be drained to replace liners or repair liners. Fiberglass pools carry a lifetime warranty and never need resurfacing so there is no need to drain the pool. So the end result is that many more gunite and vinyl pools float than do fiberglass; don’t be fooled.

Anyone concerned with water under the pool should consult their pool dealer and have a simple drain installed so that water under the pool can be monitored and drained if necessary. There is a wide selection of solutions so there should never be any damage to any pool as a result of high water levels under the pool.

Gel Coat

The gel coat is the surface layer that gives a fiberglass pools its beautiful smooth texture. It is the same texture as most boats and water slides have. It also gives the pool its color.

Leisure Pools possesses the exclusive USA rights to manufacture with the world leading Aquaguard® gel coats from FGI, a division of Nuplex Industries. FGI is a world leader in fiberglass technology.

About Aquagaurd® Gel Coat

Aquaguard® Gel coat finishes have been developed and tested by Fiberglass International (FGI) through the 1980’s and 1990’s in Australia. Over the years of development, the product called for exceptional chemical resistance, mechanical strength and weathering properties especially the later for use in exterior applications in Australia where the UV intensity is extremely high.

The technology is unique and has been subject to extensive testing programs (both accelerated and real-time) concentrated on the combination of weathering and chemical resistance.

These stunning color gel coats have been specifically developed over the last 12 years for swimming pools and designed and tested to withstand the Australian extreme UV conditions. Simply put they are the very best gel coats in the world and they are only available to be used in manufacturing within in the United States by Leisure Pools.

Resin and Fiberglass

Leisure Pools uses the highest quality isophthalics resin available from AOC, a world leader in resin technology.

AOC isophthalic resin is generally used in the manufacture of water and petroleum tanks. These superior resins possess a far greater resistance, strength and heat tolerance than that of the more common general purpose resins.

To our knowledge Leisure Pools is the only USA manufacturer to use this high quality resin. Why? Simply because we are committed to building the very best quality pool available and we will not compromise on our product and stand behind our lifetime structural and 15 year color warranty (for color pools only).

Sure isophthalics resins are more expensive. In contrast, most other manufacturers use low cost “odd lot” resins that can be procured cheaply. So before you buy a pool, check with the supplier of the resin to determine the quality.

The fiberglass used in our pools is supplied by PPG. We use the highest quality Hybon 6000 which has excellent consistency and resin impregnation properties.

PPG’s fiberglass businesses continue to expand through innovation and leadership, making PPG one of the largest global manufacturers of continuous-strand fiberglass. PPG Fiberglass is a world leader in manufacturing continuous strand fiberglass used in a wide range of fiberglass applications.

Vinyl Ester or Barrier Coat Resins

The use of these resins has become widely adopted and has eliminated the problems of blistering that was evident in fiberglass product such as boats and pools about 10 years ago. Regrettably, there are still some manufactures that do not use vinyl ester or barrier coat resins.

Leisure Pools uses the highest quality AOC Vinyl Ester resins to provide the very best barrier coat protection possible.

In areas we do not have a dealer; we can still assist you with a DIY installation. Being your own pool builder can be an exciting and gratifying experience.

Water Chemistry – Importance and Issues

At Leisure we receive calls every day on “What do I do”? Often these are calls and issues not associated with equipment or options but more simply proper balance and water chemistry. More and more builders are opting out of the service and retail side of our industry. We often do a great job of selling and explaining all of the “add-ons” but can sometimes not focus as highly on day to day care.

As we know, there are several basic parts of water chemistry….. Sanitation, PH, Alkalinity, Calcium and Stabilizers. What we often don’t discuss is what can happen if these basic parts are ignored. Surface whitening is the fastest growing call we receive. This issue is NOT a warranty issue and more alarming because of the simplicity of prevention.

What is Pool Surface Whitening?

The whitening is due to calcium leeching from the pool water and clinging to the side walls, steps and floor of the pool. It can be seen as a streak or solid area and is especially noticeable when the water level is lowered and the calcium dries.

Why does it happen?

Calcium naturally occurs in water. Different areas of the country have naturally higher and lower levels of calcium in the water. The higher the calcium concentration in the water, the more prone the pool is to calcium leeching. When the PH is maintained between 7.2 and 7.4 the calcium is balanced in the water. When the PH rises above 7.4, calcium begins to leech out of the water and cling to the pool surface. The higher the PH is allowed to go, the more pronounced the calcification will become. Obviously the problem occurs more often in areas with higher natural concentration of calcium in the water (also known as hard water)

How do I treat it?

If the problem is treated and corrected in early stages, say 1 to 3 months, the calcium can be treated with a chemical solution. First the PH must be lowered to 6.5. Then treat the pool with muriatic acid and or calcium treatments available at your local pool supply store. If the pool is equipped with a heater, heat pump, etc. a bypass should be installed and isolate the unit/units during this treatment as to not damage the exchangers. Any other items that may be damaged from extended a low PH environment should also be removed or isolated. Once the problem is controlled, restore the PH to 7.2 to 7.4 and be sure to maintain it at these levels so the problem does not re-appear.

What if I do nothing?

If the pool is maintained with very high PH over a period of time, longer than 3 months then the problem can turn severe. The calcium begins to combine with the pool chlorine producing a chemical salt known as Calcium Chloride. This salt attaches itself to the pool surface and causes the surface to appear significantly lighter especially when dehydrated. In advanced cases the calcium chloride is so bad that the pool even when hydrated (full of water) it still shows the whitening.

**In some cases if severe you will need to treat in a different manner. If advanced Calcium Chloride is suspected, you need to contact the factory immediately.**

pH

pH is the single most important element in swimming pool water chemistry. It affects every other chemical balance in pool water.

pH is a measure of hydrogen ion (H+) concentration in water. It indicates the relative acidity or basicity of pool water. pH is measured on a scale of 0 (strong acid) to 14 (strong base) with 7 being the neutral pH.

In pools a slightly alkaline pH of 7.4 to 7.6 is most desirable because this range is most comfortable to the human eye and provides for optimum use of free chlorine while maintaining water that is not corrosive or scale forming.

If pH is too low (below 7)

• Water becomes acidic
• Chlorine residuals dissipate rapidly
• Eye irritation occurs
• Plaster walls are etched
• Metal fittings, pump impeller, heater core may corrode
• Dissolved metals may leave stains on walls
• Rapid Loss of alkalinity

If pH is too high (above

• Chlorine activity is slowed and inefficient
• Scale formation and discoloration of pool walls
• Water becomes cloudy
• Filter is overworked
• Eye irritation may occur

pH Adjustment
To avoid the problems listed above, pH must be maintained between 7.2 and 7.8. The most desirable level for pH is between 7.4 and 7.6.
If pH is too low – run alkali demand test if available. Raise pH by adding soda ash (sodium carbonate). Never add more than 2 lbs per 10,000 gallons in a single treatment. Be sure the pump is running when chemicals are added. Allow to recirculate then retest to determine if further treatment is necessary. Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is sometimes used with chemical feed pumps to raise pH. If problems with low pH persist, it may be necessary to raise total alkalinity to stabilize the pH.

If pH is too high – run acid demand test if available. pH is lowered by adding muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) or sodium bisulfate. Carefully add acid at the deep end of the pool. Try not to pour acid near pool walls or fittings. Remember: When using or diluting acids,” do as you oughta, add the acid to the water” (never add water to acid)
NOTE: 10 lbs. sodium bisulfate is roughly the same as 1 gal. muriatic acid.

Factors which affect pH:

Total Alkalinity (TA)

Total alkalinity is closely associated with pH but rather than a measure of hydrogen ion concentration it is a measure of the ability of a solution to neutralize hydrogen ions. Expressed in parts per million (ppm), total alkalinity is the result of alkaline materials including carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxides – mostly bicarbonates. This acid neutralizing (buffering) capacity of water is desirable because it helps prevent wide variations in pH whenever small amounts of acid or alkali are added to the pool. Total alkalinity is a measure of water’s resistance to change in pH.

Total alkalinity should be maintained in the range of 80 to 150 ppm.

If total alkalinity is too low:
pH changes rapidly when chemicals or impurities enter the water. pH may drop rapidly, causing etching and corrosion.

If total alkalinity is too high:
pH becomes difficult to adjust. High pH often occurs causing other problems such as; cloudy water, decreased disinfectant effectiveness, scale formation and filter problems.

Raising total Alkalinity – Total alkalinity can be raised by the addition of bicarbonate of soda (sodium bicarbonate, baking soda). 1.4 lbs. bicarbonate of soda per 10,000 gallons will raise total alkalinity 10 ppm.

In some cases, soda ash can be used to raise total alkalinity. Pound for pound, soda ash raises alkalinity 60 percent more than sodium bicarbonate and is cheaper than sodium bicarbiante. The problem with using soda ash to increase alkalinity is it drastically increases pH. This can cause cloudy water and scale formation. Soda ash should only be used to increase total alkalinity if you also need to increase the pH or if only small increases in alkalinity are needed.

Chemical manufactures are now marketing a total alkalinity increaser which combines the effects of sodium bicarbonate and soda ash. The product sodium sesquicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate affects total alkalinity more than sodium bicarbonate, but does not cause quite as much increase in pH as soda ash does.

Lowering total Alkalinity – Total alkalinity can be lowered by adding muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate. Acid may be added in doses of up to 1 quart per 10,000 gallons. Total alkalinity tests and further required additions of acid can be made every 2 hours.

Calcium Hardness:

Calcium hardness is a measure of the dissolved calcium salts in water. Under normal conditions this should not be a problem in properly operated swimming pools. Estimates of the proper range of calcium hardness vary widely but the ideal level for plaster pool is generally considered to be about 250 ppm. If calcium hardness is very low then water may leach calcium from pool walls causing pitting of the plaster surface. Very high calcium hardness may contribute to scale formation and clouding of the water. To raise calcium hardness – add calcium chloride.

To lower calcium hardness anhydrous trisodium phosphate may be used. One pound trisodium phosphate per 10,000 gallons will lower calcium hardness 11 ppm. Use in small increments or clouding may occur. Another method of lowering calcium hardness is to simply drain off part of the pool water and dilute the remaining water with fresh make up water.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

After a pool has been in use for a time, dissolved solids may begin to accumulate. These unfilterable solids include body wastes, suntan lotion, stabilizer, chlorines, algicide, dirt, pollen, etc. Normally this is less of a problem with outdoor pools because of rain water and no use during winter months. Indoor pools sometimes have a buildup of dissolved solids requiring draining the pool and refilling with fresh water. Most pools should be drained after 3 to 5 years. Ideally pool water contains under 450 ppm total dissolved solids.

DISINFECTION OF POOL WATER

A proper balance of the previously described water chemistry factors will provide water that will not damage pool components and is non-irritating to swimmers. It is then necessary to provide for disinfection of the water to prevent the spread of disease organisms from person to person and prevent unwanted growth of bacteria and algae in the pool.

Chlorine
The most commonly used disinfectant for swimming pools is chlorine. In its elemental form chlorine is a heavy greenish yellow gas which is so toxic that is has been used as a weapon in chemical warfare. Because of the extremely high potential for injury or death from improper use of chlorine gas, a number of chlorine compounds have been formulated to provide chlorine in forms that can be handled and used safely by swimming pool operators.

The following forms of chlorine are commonly used in swimming pools:

Gas Chlorine: 100% available chlorine

Because of the special hazards associated with the use of gaseous chlorine, its use has been prohibited at public swimming pools in North Carolina.

Calcium Hypochlorite: granular or pelletized 65% available chlorine

WARNING – do not use in closed tablet feeders designed to use other forms of chlorine

Sodium Hypochlorite: Liquid bleach 12.5% available chlorine

Trichloroisocyanuric Acid: sticks or tablets 90% available chlorine

Other forms of chlorine less commonly used are lithium hypochlorite, potassium dichloroisocyanuric acid, and sodium dichloroisocyanuric acid.

Free Chlorine Residual is the amount of chlorine in the pool which has not reacted with substances other than water. It is the chlorine which is available to disinfect pool water and oxidize organic substances. Free chlorine residual should be maintained between 1 and 3 ppm.

Combined Chlorine is chlorine in the pool which has reacted with substance other than water and is no longer available in its free state. Some combined chlorines are bactericides but they contribute little to the disinfection process. Chlorine combined with ammonia produces chloramines which cause eye irritation and an objectionable chlorine odor. For this reason combined chlorine residual should be kept to a minimum preferably below 0.2 ppm.

Total Chlorine residual is the concentration of free chlorine plus combined chlorine. To determine combined chlorine residual test for free chlorine and total chlorine.

Total chlorine – free chlorine = combined chlorine

Breakpoint Chlorination is the process by which combined chlorine and some organics are “burned out” of the pool by addition of large amounts of chlorine. The reaction of chlorine with ammonia to form chloramines occurs in several stages with free chlorine consumed at each stage. If enough chlorine is added to the water the total chlorine residual will rise to a point that forces the reaction of chlorine with ammonia to go rapidly to completion. Compounds of nitrogen and chlorine are released from the water and the apparent residual chlorine decreases. The point at which the chlorine residual suddenly drops is called the breakpoint. When enough chlorine is added to pass the breakpoint, combined chlorine compounds disappear, eye irritation potential and chlorine odors disappear, and the chlorine remaining in the water is all in the free state.

Superchlorination: In order to prevent buildup of chloramines in the pool it is necessary to periodically add large amounts of new chlorine in an effort to pass the breakpoint. Public swimming pools should be supechlorinated about once a week. The amount of chlorine needed to reach the breakpoint will vary depending on the amount of organic material introduced by bathers and on the level of free chlorine maintained in the pool. If the amount of combined chlorine is known then the amount of new chlorine needed is ten times the amount of combined chlorine. When combined chlorine residual is not known, superchlorination is accomplished by adding 10 ppm of new chlorine to the pool. Ordinarily calcium hypochlorite at a dose of at least 1 lb. per 10,000 gallons is used for superchlorination. The chart below shows the amounts of various chlorine compounds which can be used to introduce 10 ppm of chlorine to the pool.

Non-chlorine Shock Treatments Several products have been developed which oxidize organics without the use of chlorine. Pools which use those products can accomplish the reduction of organics without closing the pool for any longer than it takes to dissolve and distribute the chemicals. Those products are more expensive than chlorine but may be preferred where it is necessary to keep a pool open.

How pH affects free chlorine residual Chlorine reacts with water to form Hypochlorous acid (HOC1). The reaction is different for each form of chlorine but hypochlorous acid is produced by each of those reactions and is the form in which chlorine serves best as a disinfectant. Hypochlorous acid is a weak acid and easily dissociates to an ionized hypochlorite state as shown below.

This is important because both hypochlorous acid and the hypochlorite ion are counted as free chlorine residual on your test kit but only the hypochlorous acid portion is an effective disinfectant. The balance between hypochlorous acid and the hypochlorite ion is affected by pH. The higher the pH, the less hypochlorous acid present and the less effective free chlorine becomes. At a pH of 7.2 about 66% of free chlorine is hypochlorous acid. At a pH of 7.8 only about 33% of free chlorine is hypochlorous acid. Thus pH control is essential for maintaining the effectiveness of chlorine as a disinfectant.

Stabilizer – Cyanuric Acid
Hypochlorous acid is a highly unstable molecule which dissipates rapidly in the presence of sunlight. This results in considerable loss of free chlorine form pools exposed to sunlight. Proper stabilization of chlorine with cyanuric acid slows the rate of chlorine dissipation without appreciably sacrificing oxidation and disinfection activity. Reaction of free chlorine with cyanuric acid produces a form of combined chlorine (chlorimide) which is active enough to aid disinfection and show up as free chlorine residual on your test kit. Proper stabilization requires 30 to 50 ppm cyanuric acid. Outdoor pools should be initially treated with 40 ppm cyanuric acid. The chart below can be used to determine the amount of cyanuric acid needed.

Cyanuric acid dissolves very slowly and is best predissolved in warm water before introducing into the pool. If it is not predissolved it may take several days to dissolve completely. Once added to the pool, cyanuric acid does not dissipate. It is removed from the pool only by splash out and backwash waste. Stabilized chlorine products such as trichloroisocyanuric acid will add stabilizer to the pool and may cause a gradual rise in cyanuric acid concentration. Excessive amounts of cyanuric acid can interfere with the disinfection process and at concentrations above 100 ppm may cause “chlorine lock” and clouding of the pool. Cyanuric acid level is lowered by draining part of the water out of the pool and diluting the remaining water with fresh water. Generally cyanuric acid level should be kept below 60 ppm. Stabilized forms of chlorine should not be used for superchlorination because cyanuric acid level may be increased.

Bromine
Bromine is chemically very similar to chlorine. Bromine compounds tend to react more slowly than chlorine compounds so bromine is generally more stable and less subject dissipation in sunlight. The dissociation of hypobromous acid into the bromine ion is less affected by pH than the corresponding reaction of chlorine. This makes bromine active over a larger range of pH than chlorine. Bromine will combine with ammonia to form bromamines similar to chlorine but unlike chloramines, bromamines are effective bactericides and do not produce the degree of odor and eye irritation associated with chloramines. Bromine is less affected by high temperature and nitrogen wastes than chlorine so it is particularly attractive for use in hot water spas. Bromine is more expensive than chlorine and has not yet received widespread acceptance by swimming pool operators.

The form of bromine most commonly used in pools and spas is the organic chemical bromo-chloro-dimethylhydantoin which contains both bromine and chlorine. It is marketed under various trade names and is generally in tablet form for use in erosion feeders..

Bromine residual should be maintained between 2 and 4 ppm. Bromine residual is measured using the DPD #1 test used to measure free chlorine. If your test kit does not include a bromine scale then bromine residual is approximately 2.25 times the reading on the chlorine scale.

Biganide disinfectants
The only disinfectant other than chlorine and bromine which has been accepted as a primary disinfectant in public swimming pools is polyhexamethylene biguanide. Biguanide is used at a concentration of 30 to 50 parts per million and a pH of 7.2 to 7.8 to kill germs and control algae growth. A special test kit is needed to test the biguanide residual. The main advantage of biguanide is the disinfectant concentration remains fairly stable so it requires less frequent adjustment than chlorine. No automatic chemical feeder is needed.

Biguanide is not an oxidizer and will not destroy organic wastes the way chlorine and bromine do. It must be used in conjunction with a peroxide shock treatment to prevent organic wastes from accumulating in pool water. Biguanide is incompatible with chlorine and most algicides. Chlorine in make-up water can cause clouding of biguanide pools. Biguanide increases the staining potential of dissolved metals in a pool so copper based algicides, copper ion generators, and pool heaters should not be used. Only chemicals recommended by the disinfectant manufacturers should be used.

Supplemental disinfection equipment
A variety of supplemental disinfection process equipment is being marketed for use on swimming pools. The most common are copper/silver ion generators, ozone generators, and ultraviolet light generators. While each process provides some disinfection activity, they are not accepted as primary disinfectants in public swimming pools because they are either too slow or do not provide a disinfectant residual. Supplemental disinfection equipment, if used, must be used in conjunction with a free chlorine or bromine residual.

ALGAE CONTROL

Algae are tiny plants that bloom and grow in swimming pools if nutrients are present and a sufficient level of free chlorine is not maintained. Below are descriptions of the three most common algae problems in swimming pools.

Green Algae The most common algae in swimming pool floats in water and coats pool surfaces. Left unchecked green algae will very quickly turn the pool water pea green.

Mustard Algae settles on pool walls and causes a slimy yellow film.

Black Algae appears in “buds” or clumps attached to tile grout, corners, steps and pool surfaces.

Solution:
Green Algae – is very susceptible to chemical treatment. Superchlorinate with 10 to 20 ppm chlorine in the evening. Keep the filter running and brush the pool walls and bottom. Periodically check chlorine and maintain above 3 ppm until water clears. Using an algicide containing quaternary ammonia the next morning will help prevent the return of green algae.

Mustard Algae – is much more resistant to chemical treatment and clings more tightly to pool walls than green algae. Adjust pH and superchlorinate as for green algae then brush diligently. Later vacuum the pool, check chlorine and superchorinate again if necessary. Mustard algae will generally return unless treated with a special mustard algicide or a copper based algicide. Algicide should be added in the morning to treat algae in daylight – its most active period.

Black Algae – is very difficult to get rid of. It can be controlled to some extent by frequent superchlorination and diligent brushing with a stiff brush. Spot treatments can be made by turning off the recirculation pumps and pouring granular chlorine directly on recently brushed spots. Trichlor tablets can also be rubbed on recently brushed areas to spot treat. Black algae can usually be controlled with the use of strong alicides and maintenance of relatively high free chlorine residual, but complete removal of black algae may require draining and cleaning the pool.

Note: Algae blooms are a problem best avoided. Maintaining proper water quality and frequent brushing of pool walls will deprive algae of the opportunity to get started.

Tips for Operating Your Aqua Rite™ System

Always make sure your Salt System Computer is set for your Matching Cell either A t9 or t15 prior to moving on to the next steps.  Sometimes a power outage can change the settings.

Operating ~ Utilizing the “AUTO” Functionality

The ideal daily filter operation of your pool should be approximately 8-10 hours

per day with a salt reading anywhere between 2700-3200. The Cycle Mode Switch,

which is located on the left side of the panel on the Aqua Rite, should be in the “auto”

position for everyday Chlorinating. The desired output function can be located in the

middle, and this feature allows you to control how much Chlorine is getting into the pool.

Your Aqua Rite runs on a 100 minute cycle, and your desired output function is where

you control how many minutes out of the 100 minute cycle that it actually generates

Chlorine. We suggest that you keep the desired output dial between 30 and 40.

Shocking ~ Utilizing the “Super Chlorinate” Functionality

The “super chlorinating” position on the Cycle Mode Switch is a method of

shocking your pool. In this process the Aqua Rite overrides the desired output and

chlorinates the pool for the full 100 minute cycle. This cycle should be left on for

approximately four to five hours and should be done once every seven to ten days. After

the cycle is done, simply reset the Cycle Mode Switch to the “auto” position and resume

your normal chlorinating processes. However, if the pool is left on “super chlorinating”

for an extended period of time, it will only process for the first 24 hours. After 24 hours,

it automatically returns to the “auto” feature whether or not you reset the Cycle Mode

Switch to the “auto” position.

Stabilizing your Water

The salt generator produces chlorine for your pool that is not stabilized. The

water should be analyzed on a regular basis to make sure that the chlorine that is being

generated is not being dissipated by the sunlight. An easier way to detect a stabilizer

issue in the pool is with either the test strips and/or the testing kit. The test strips have a

color block to measure the ideal level of stabilizer for your pool. The test kit can be used

in a different way. The stabilizer can be checked by merely comparing your salt reading

on the Aqua Rite and the Chlorine reading on the kit. If the salt is at an ideal level on the

Aqua Rite, and you are not getting a reading of chlorine in the pool with the test kit, there

is not enough stabilizer in the pool to maintain the ideal chlorine level. On the other

hand, Stabilizer is not an easy chemical to work with and should be tested by a pool

chemist as frequent as once a week. If the level of stabilizer is far too high; you may have

to drain a portion of the water in the pool. Prior to doing so, please contact one of our

pool specialists to ensure that action is necessary.

START-UP PROCEDURE: AQUA RITE SALT SYSTEM

_ Before starting, make sure the pool is clean. Normally, after the installation, as

in the spring, the pool requires a good cleaning. You can refer to the owner’s manual

for instructions on cleaning in the Waste filter mode.

_ The Aqua Rite system must be in the «OFF» position but the pool must be

functioning.

_ Pour the recommended quantity of salt in the deep end of the pool.

_ Wait approximately 48 hours for the salt to completely dissolve, do not perform a Backwash or Waste

during this period.

_ After 48 hours, put the Aqua Rite in the «Auto» position. Wait a few minutes and take your first PPM

reading (Part Per Million of salt found in the water).

To function properly, your Aqua Rite salt system needs a ppm level situated between 2,700 ppm and

3,400 ppm.

By pressing on the DIAGNOSTIC button, your monitor should indicate a PPM level between 2,700

and 3,400. However, if your ppm level does not reach 2,700 ppm, gradually add some salt. On the other

hand, if your ppm level is higher than 3,400 ppm, perform a WASTE function for a few seconds and

bring the water back to the recommended level. Then, recheck your PPM level.

_ To start the chemical treatment of your water, you must place the chlorine DESIRED OUTPUT

PERCENTAGE to 40%. Wait 2 days, then test the chlorine level with yellow phenol drops. If you are

satisfied with the chlorine level, leave the percentage as it is. If your result is too high or too low, adjust

the DESIRED OUTPUT PERCENTAGE of the chlorine accordingly (reduce the % if it is too high,

increase the % if it is too low).

_ Note: during the summer, the level of DESIRED OUTPUT of chlorine will probably need to be

modified depending on the water’s temperature, the ambient temperature and the length of days (for

example, the need for chlorine will be increased during a heat wave and will decrease when it is cold.)

After floating around you tube I came across a really nice video from pool guy supply where they demonstrate how to properly clean a salt water cell.  Cleaning the cell is very easy and should be done in the middle of the season and at the end of the season when the pool is being closed.  This way when you are ready to open your pool in the spring your Salt Generator is ready to operate at its fullest potential.  Please look at the video provided below to learn how to properly clean the salt cell of calcium deposits.

Mark spent many years in the concrete business before turning his interests into fiberglass swimming pools back in 2001. Since then Artistic Pools has become one of the most decorated fiberglass pool distributors and Installers on the east Coast. Jenea Peditto is a graduate of Burlington County College. Pictured above is my wonderful family Jenea, Gianna and Tyler. This is the main reason I go to work everyday. Jenea is a stay at home mom now taking care of our everyday operations of pulling permits and to answer any general questions pertaining to your pool permit process. We work very well together to make sure our swimming pool projects run smoothly.

Mike Neri who is the Vice President and my Partner in Business. Mike brings a wealth of knowledge and business skills to our company. Mike is a hands on Owner unlike other pool companies. Mike is present on every Job. Mike has been Stamping concrete for over 20 years now and is one of the pioneers here in New Jersey being one of the first to endeavor into the Stamped Concrete Industry back in 1990. I have to Say most partnerships in business fail for some reason or another. Our partnership started as a friendship back in the early 90’s and has developed into a well respected business partnership and has continued to prosper due to like minded goals and aspirations. He is one of the hardest workers I know and treats every pool build as if it was his own.

John Cutillo: Vice President of Sales and Marketing

John Cutillo is my lifelong best friend and current Sales and Marketing Consultant at Artistic Pools. John brings a wealth of knowledge and people skills to the table. John has a degree in Marketing from Temple University. John is an all around type of Guy. Not only will john sell you a swimming pool and concrete decking but chances are you will see him in your backyard either on the pool crew with Mike or on the Stamped Concrete crew or Both. He is not just interested in making a sale he makes sure you get exactly what you paid for and that is important in this industry. He is one of the most organized, clean freak of a person I know other than myself and that my friend makes for a clean Job.

Rick Thurman: Depot Manager

Rick Thurman is the man who makes our pool depot Run. Rick has been with Artistic Pools for nearly 7 years now and has been one of our most dependable team members since joining our team back in 2004. Rick brings a wealth of knowledge to our Crew being a previous Tile installer and Crane operator in his earlier Years. Rick runs a crew of three guys including his Son Ricky who aids in tiling and loading of all our pools. They both are responsible for getting our pools built prior to the installation. They install the skimmers, Main Drains, Returns and Lights prior to the pools leaving our depot yard. Ricky is an avid Phillies Fan who listens to just about every phillies game on the radio throughout the Season. He is our Mr. Dependable when needing things to be done on a hunch. We really value his loyalty and Dedication to our company.

Duties: Tiling of Pools, Off loading and Loading of Pools, Crane Operator, and general yard maintenance

Rick Thurman Jr: Pool Depot operator

Ricky Thurman Jr son of Rick Sr works diligently with his father Ricky to make sure all of our pools are cleaned, Tiled, Built and ready for install. Ricky has been with our company for many years as well and brings a wealth of knowledge to our company in the area of Tile installation and pool building mechanics. Ricky works hand in hand with his father to ensure our pools are problem free and ready for delivery.

Mike Sr. Concrete Foreman

Mike Sr who is Mike the owners Dad is responsible for setting all the concrete forms for all our concrete Jobs and is responsible for overseeing the dig for our pool projects. Mike Sr is in the hole directing the Dig while using a transit to make sure all our pools are level before water and back filling begin.

Frank Neri “Unc”: CDL Driver

Frank Neri who we all call UNC is Mike the owners uncle. Uncle Frank is our CDL tri axle dump truck driver who is responsible for hauling all of our dirt away to dump sites and bringing loads of stone to our swimming pool projects. UNC has been part of our company for over 10 years now and has been a real team player throughout his career with Artistic Pools Corp. Uncle Frank is nearing 70 years old but works like a 40 year old on a mission. We really value his dedication and support he has provided throughout the years.

Robert Moore: Class A CDL Driver

Robert Moore has been an integral part of our company for many years as well. Robert is responsible for delivering our swimming pools to a dealer base spreading from Virginia as far up as Maine. Robert handles getting the escorts for all of our pool depot deliveries. Robert also is directly involved in our yard crew helping Rick Sr and rick Jr in getting our pools unloaded, cleaned and ready for delivery. He has been the backbone of our distribution business for many years and is very dependable and very intelligent when it comes to DOT issues and trucking in General. He has been a great asset to our company and we look forward to a bright future ahead in the distribution portion of our company.

Joe Peditto Sr and Joey Peditto Jr: Pool installers, Builders, Concrete Masons, Outdoor Kitchens, Paver Installers

As you can see Joe and Joey share the same Last name as Mark yes me the owner. I’m sure you have noticed many throughout this post sharing the same last names. We pride ourselves as mostly a family run, friend driven business. My brother Joe is what we like to call a jack of all trades. He has been building homes now for nearly three decades. Joe and Joey are directly responsible for building pool houses, Gazebos, outdoor Kitchens, Sun rooms, Pavers, and just about any outdoor recreation project you can think of. Joe’s talents are incredible and I must say I envy his knowledge in the building industry. My nephew Joey is quickly following in his fathers footsteps and we look forward to him stepping into our pool installation crew in years to come.

Kevin Thurman: Plumber, Tile Installer, Pool crew Manager, Service Technician

Kevin Thurman has been with Artistic Pools since the very beginning. Kevin is another what I like to call Jack of all trades. He is responsible for Plumbing all of our pools. He works in conjunction with our swimming pool crew. Kevin is a Master Plumber. He sets all of our pool equipment up. He is responsible for building the Pump, Filter, Salt Water System, Heaters, Led Lighting and making sure everything is pressure tested prior to filling the pool with water. Kevin Also runs our Service department. He is one of the guys you will see opening or Closing your swimming pool. Kevin Also has been tiling our pools for nearly a decade. He has hands of steel and has been one of our primary go to guys in dealing with everyday tasks and pool building. He has been a great friend and a wonderful worker throughout his many years with our company.

Richard King: The King Company Electrician

Richard King has been an electrician now for nearly 60 years. Richard King and his Son Todd King has been our electrician since our beginnings. They are responsible for wiring all of our swimming pools. They have been extremely professional and their work speaks for itself. They are very knowledgeable in swimming pool chemistry as well as all the additional options associated with our swimming pool packages such as Salt water Systems, Led Lighting, Elect heat Pumps, Water Features, and all other outdoor projects pertaining to their industry. Over the past weekend Leisure Pools held it’s annual National Dealer Conference in San Antonio Texas. I must say from the minute I stepped foot on this State of the Art facility I had come to the realization that Leisure Pools is here for the Duration.
