Pool Depot History

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Back in 2001 Artistic Pools had this bright idea of becoming a fiberglass pool depot for the northeast. This idea came to light due to the high cost of shipping pools across the country. It never made sense, nor does it still make sense to ship only one pool to a job site out of Florida, Texas or Virginia. Michael and I decided it was time to invest into a piece of property to facilitate movements of pools from southern Maryland to Maine and into Canada. As you can see in the Pic above we received our first pool on a vacant 3 acre piece of grass we purchased for over a quarter of a million dollars. We thought buying the land was the hard part, but boy were we in for a big surprise. As you know, New Jersey is an expensive place to live and nothing comes easy in this state. The twp required us to get a variance in order to store fiberglass swimming pools. We were required to put up an office building, fence in the Lot, create a parking lot with handicapped ramps, get engineering plans approved, post performance bonds and maintenance bonds with the Twp, plant specific trees and shrubs, and list goes on and on. To make the long story short we got through the hectic Twp requirements, satisfied the banks and created the the largest and most successful depot to date currently offering Leisure Pools, San Juan and Crystal Palace. We started receiving loads of pools quickly and the need to grow became urgent. We bought our first piece of equipment needed to run this depot a 1996 p&F 22 ton crane.

The Crane facilitates the offloading and Loading of the fiberglass pool shells that arrive. We also have to store all our pools upside down to protect them from the elements. The crane then has to take the pool off the stack and flip the pool over to the upright position to deliver to the job site. This piece of machinery is what makes this whole operation run smoothly. This machine is used on a daily basis to facilitate the depot operations. Our swimming pool depot is capable of handling approximately 250 swimming pools ant any given time. We currently move between 150 -200 pools a year out of our depot and hope to expand this number to 300 a year.

The Largest Pool Depot in the Northeast

As we approach the 2011 season we are excited to still be part of the largest fiberglass pool depot in the Northeast. We are now offering and handling the distribution of San Juan Pools out of Florida, Leisure pools out of Texas, and Crystal Palace Pools out of Virginia. The depot is my life and I take this business very seriously. We look forward to all future endeavors involving the facilitation of pool movements through our Depot. We currently have relationships with close to 175 fiberglass pool dealers spanning from southern Maryland to Canada. Thank you for reading the history of our fiberglass pool depot and come back soon for some really cool videos:)

Navy Seabee Peter Reid injured in Iraq.

Tommie getting the troops together

The San Juan Family had the privilege of building a therapeutic pool and spa combination for Navy Seabee Peter Reid who was severely injured in the Iraq war. In all our years as a company we have never witnessed a group come together and work so unselfishly to make someone else’s life better.

After San Juan Pools’ recent annual dealer conference in Orlando, Fla., 50 participants volunteered their time to help build a fiberglass therapy pool and spa at the home a Navy veteran who had been critically injured in Iraq. Peter Reid, a Navy Seabee of 17 years, was injured in an attack 11 months ago when a mortar hit a compound where some Seabees and Marines were gathered.

The explosion paralyzed Reid’s left side and left him blind in one eye. Upon hearing about his case, San Juan agreed to build its conference demo pool at Reid’s home. The dealers stayed behind after the event to work on the installation, valued at $50,000. The San Juan dealers also collected $5,000 in cash for pool maintenance, which the company matched.

Over twenty San Juan dealerships volunteered their time and expertise to complete the project in addition to raising $10,000.00 that was presented to the Reid family to assist with upkeep and maintenance of their new pool.

Our vendor partners came through with flying colors donating virtually everything to complete the project. The end result was a completed project that we can all be proud of.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who participated:

I have to say one thing about this project (awesome).  Kudos for all the women and men who helped make this event one to remember.  After personally meeting Peter I can honestly say I have a greater respect for life itself and for the men and women who serve our country every day.  It was such an honor for Artistic Pools to be a part of such a wonderful opportunity.  Our main part of the project was the installation of the Stamped Concrete Deck around the Therapy Pool.  The Pool had numerous Jets. a wheel chair lift, and multiple therapy stations for Peter to rehabilitate himself.  The project took a total of three days to complete from start to finish.  Again thanks to Peter Reid and San Juan Pools for allowing us the opportunity to serve such a wonderful person.
